What You Need to Know Before Your Treatment
At Marie Rose Massage and Aesthetics, we want your peel experience to be both safe and effective, ensuring that you receive the full benefits of the treatment while avoiding any adverse reactions. Whether you’re considering the Signature Lift, Lightning Lift, Wrinkle Lift, Acne Lift, or any of our other specialized peels, understanding the precautions and contraindications is key to preparing your skin and protecting your health.
Peel Precautions
While chemical peels offer amazing results, they can also increase your skin’s sensitivity during and after treatment. Here’s what to expect and the steps to follow to ensure a safe experience:
– Increased Sensitivity: Some clients may experience heightened sensitivity, depending on their skin type and home care regimen. Post-treatment reactions can include:
– Stinging, itching, or irritation
– Redness or swelling
– Tightness, peeling, or scabbing
– It’s important to avoid picking or rubbing the skin during this time.
– Activities to Avoid: After your peel, you’ll want to avoid activities that can interfere with the healing process or cause irritation, including:
– Saunas, hot baths, and steam rooms
– Tanning beds and direct sun exposure
– Sweating from exercise
– Scrubbing or exfoliating the treated area
– Picking or rubbing the skin, which can lead to scarring
– Hair Removal: Refrain from waxing or using depilatories 48 hours before and 7 days after your peel.
– Skincare Adjustments:
– Stop using exfoliating scrubs, glycolic acid, or benzoyl peroxide products 24 hours before and after treatment.
– Discontinue the use of prescription Vitamin A (such as Retin-A or keratolytic drugs) 7 days before and after treatment.
– Sun Protection: A broad-spectrum sunscreen should be worn daily before and after your peel to protect the skin from UV damage and hyperpigmentation.
Peel Contraindications
There are certain conditions and medications that may prevent you from receiving a chemical peel. If any of the following apply to you, please consult with your physician or discuss it with us before scheduling your treatment:
– Recent Accutane or Isotretinoin Use: You should not have used Accutane or similar drugs within the past 6 months.
– Prescription Keratolytic Drugs: Avoid peels if you’ve used Retin-A, Renova, or other keratolytic drugs in the past 7 days.
– Hydrocortisone: Current use of hydrocortisone could cause heightened sensitivity and should be discontinued before treatment.
– Allergies to Aspirin or Salicylic Acid: If you’re allergic to aspirin, salicylic peels may not be suitable for you.
– Facial Skin Conditions: If you are being treated by a dermatologist for facial skin diseases or if you have a history of herpes simplex, it’s important to consult your doctor before proceeding.
– Active Skin Infections: Peels should be avoided if you have any active skin infections, including herpes, or if you’ve had radiation therapy to the treatment area.
– Laser Resurfacing or Recent Chemical Peels: If you’ve had laser resurfacing, chemical peels, or dermabrasion recently, wait until your skin has fully healed.
– History of Scarring: If you have a history of hypertrophic scar formation, this treatment may not be suitable.
– Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid chemical peels.
– Obsessive Picking or Non-Compliance: Clients who tend to pick at their skin or who may not comply with aftercare instructions are at higher risk for complications.
– Diabetes: Certain peels may not be appropriate for individuals with diabetes due to slower healing times.
– Visible Irritation: If you are currently experiencing redness, irritation, or a flare-up of rosacea, it’s best to postpone the treatment.
– Sunburn or Windburn: Severe dehydration or sunburned skin is not suitable for a peel.
– Open Sores or Skin Lesions: Avoid peels if you have open sores, broken skin, or any suspicious lesions.
– Recent Cosmetic Treatments: Wait at least 7 days after cosmetic injections or 2 weeks after permanent makeup before receiving a peel.
– Recent Surgery: If you’ve had cosmetic surgery, we recommend waiting until your surgeon clears you for additional treatments.
